Sample Questions:

  • How would you feel if you dropped your ice cream cone?
  • How can you tell a person is confident? (The way they walk, their mannerisms, their tone of voice, etc.)

  • True or False: The following is a good apology: “I’m sorry I threw the ball at Jimmy, but I was so mad because he didn’t run to first base.” (False. You aren’t taking 100% responsibility for your actions because you are still blaming Jimmy for his actions).
  • Show the facial expression and body language you might display if you were recognized as the “student of the day.”

The questions were designed utilizing Saarni’s Theory of Emotional Competency which include the following components:

  • Ability to use the vocabulary of emotion.
  • Capacity for empathy/sympathy.
  • Ability to know that our outside expression does not always match our internal state.
  • Ability to regulate emotions.
  • Accepting responsibility for our own emotional experience.
  • Awareness that relationships are largely defined by emotional communication.
